The Great! Feng Shui ® software product was designed to simplify some of the arcane calculations that are part of Feng Shui, and to supply the background knowledge and theory of Feng Shui principles so that a person who is still developing their energy awareness will have the direction and support that they need to make their own decisions. The software can point out potential problems and suggest likely remedies. You then choose what course to take, and watch the effect that your change has made on the energy of your home. Through trial and error over time (weeks, months, even years), you will come to discern subtle energy changes yourself, and will know how each technique you have applied has shifted that energy.

You will begin by creating a Profile for you and all the members of your household. On the Profile screen click the New button, then enter a Name, Gender, and Birth date (using the Western Calendar system), then click the Calculate button to calculate the KUA or Nine Ki number for the Profile, then, don't forget to SAVE!. The KUA number will tell you which I Ching Trigram and Element you were born under and what your beneficial and problematic compass directions are.

Next, you will create a location to analyze. Switch to the Location screen and click New. Enter a Description for the Location and tell how many floors there are (you can add more floors at any time). Then, add rooms to each floor. When adding rooms, you will see a square added to the floor plan. Drag it to the proper position in the floor plan for your home. To edit or view a room already in the floor plan, double-click on the room in the floor plan or in the list.

For each room, provide a Description, select the Type of room, the Floor it is on, the Length and the Width in Feet. Select the approximate Location of the room from the center of your home, or, you may set the Location for all rooms at once when you are finished adding rooms. Select the type of flooring in the room, and place a check next to any of the listed features that apply to the room. When you save the room, you will see a Feng Shui analysis for the room based on its type and location.

Once you have added all of the rooms for you home, choose the Set Directions item under the Locations menu. On the screen that appears, click on the floor plan in the direction to indicate where North lies. This will set the Location for each room in the house. The location is used to determine which type of energy most influences the room.

When you have created your profiles, you may select the On Profiles item under the Advice menu to get a detailed report for each profile. This report contains all of the information about your Element, your I Ching Trigram and your beneficial and problematic compass directions.

You may also choose to get advice on your Nine Ki Chart for any year by choosing the On Nine Ki Chart item under the Advice menu. This chart will show you the positions of all of the Nine Ki numbers for the year. Those who are familiar with Nine Star Ki astrology will find this chart very helpful in analyzing the prevailing energy influences for the year.

Advice is also available on what the best year to renovate or remodel a given location in your home would be. Or, given the year, what locations in your home are good for renovations, or those you should avoid renovating for the year. Similar advice is available for moving to a new home. You can find these features under the Advice menu, On Renovations and On Moving items respectively.

When decorating your home, it will be useful to know more about the Element energy associated with each location in your home. Under the Advice menu's On Elements item, you will see a report of all of the qualities of the Element. You will see what colors, patterns, shapes and materials are associated with the Element. And, you will learn which Elements enhance or drain the Element so you may use this information to help control the quality of chi in the room.
